Episode-44- Monitizing a Website With Multiple Income Streams

So I got a lot of requests on this topic in the past few days.  I keep telling you not to build your primary income streams on third party systems such as AdWords or Amazon, it is fine to make some money with them but the core of your revenue should be some form of direct sales.  One listener in particular owns a website called, Forgotten Weapons.  This listener has been generating tons of good content and now gets 30,000-60,000 visitors a month and is kind of stuck in a “where do I go from here mode”.  Listen today as I explain some ideas for monetizing this website.

I am happy to do this with any website as long as it has good quality and consistent content on it and has built up a reasonable amount of traffic.  The key though is after you hear today’s show you should pretty much be able to look at any site and do it for yourself.

Make no mistake this is a DEEP topic and we will cover many areas of it both with direct and third party revenue, both areas have a place.  I am sure not about to send Amazon.com their checks back, so I am not bashing third parties just pointing out how critical it is to build direct income streams and not be dependent upon a third party who can change the rules on you.

Jack- Glad to see the 5MWJ return! I love the new format and content. Takes me back to the early days of TSP (I believe I was one of the first 1k).

Best wishes and keep it coming!

    Thanks,
    Steve.

    Jack (or anyone else) –

What was the name of the web designer you mentioned in today’s podcast? I don’t know if it is my hearing or what, but I couldn’t quite understand it.

    Thanks!

Sorry Jack…I thought you mentioned a different person/entity that did web design. I didn’t realize the Forgotten Weapons site owner did design also. My hearing has really gone to crap.

    Best,

    Richard

    Jack,

Any ideas of how to begin monetization without using the Amazon affiliate program? I live in Colorado, and I’m unable to do that here. I really like the eBook idea, but I was looking for a few more.

    Thanks,

    Chris

    Hey Chris,

If you are interested in doing an e-book, it is very easy to use the Kindle store at Amazon to publish books there. Also, doing a “traditional” e-book can be done fairly easily. Check out the SmartPassiveIncome.com blog and download their free e-book on making e-books. Yes, you get on his mailing list, but it is not a spammy annoying list. The e-book on making e-books is excellent and covers not just how to make one, but how to market one, and how to set up a payment system to allow people to buy it.

    Hope that helps.

@Jack, yes, I realized that was sort of a dumb question after I asked it, hehe. I’m only on my 3rd episode of my podcast, so I have a ways to go before I start monetizing. I’m looking forward to your analysis of other websites.

@Richard, Thanks for the blog. I just signed up for the free eBook thing. Thanks for the tip!

@Chris, I was also kind of short in my response, forgive me for that. There are some other easy third party things we will cover in the future. Amazon to me is just the best. Um, can you use someone else’s address, LOL. Seriously you can look at things like AdSense, ClickBank, http://www.whichaffiliate.com/ can put you in touch with tons of people to resell for and there are many other sources. Again just be really careful to ensure you are building a direct income stream along side these other options.

@Jack, Thanks for the resources, that’s a big help. I was considering using a different address… haha. I’ll be doing an internship in Missouri starting in January for 4 months. I’m assuming I’d have to form an LLC or Corporation in Missouri in order for that to be legit? Then after I leave I could act as my own Registered Agent back home, and have my Amazon check sent there? I don’t know, sounds kinda sketchy, but if it’s legal I’ll consider it!

Could you also talk about how to integrate SM Forums into a WordPress site? Also, about how you built such a great community using the fours at the Survival Podcast, and when was the right time to launch the forums? I’m thinking about setting up forums on my site, but I have 0 listeners/visitors right now, do you think that would be an unwise decision?

    Thanks in advance,

    Chris

@Chris not legal advice again not legal advice but I would imagine a mailing address like a “virtual office” would be more than enough to cheat the system. Again not legal advice.

This was perfect, Jack. Thanks! Question: What do you feel is sufficient traffic before you attempt to monetize a site? You mentioned the gun site is getting 1000 visitors a day. I’m getting 1000 visitors a month… Can you give me an estimate number of visitors?

I need to generate more content this winter. No excuses here. You gave me some great ideas (book and product reviews) to generate more content and, at the same time, monetize with affiliate links.

What generates more traffic? Consistent content or marketing/hustling? I assume a mixture of both, right?
