Creating Consistant and Great Content is More Important than Its Format

Okay you get a twofer today!  The fist listener question is about IP diversity in relation to building a site network.  In other words is it bad to have 50 sites on one shared IP, in general the answer is yes but you also don’t need 50IPs for 50 sites and there are many cheap solutions you can enact here.

Next up another listner want to know how important it is or is not to produce daily content in a unified format.  In other words if you were going to produce three pieces of content a week does it matter if you do three different types of content, say a blog post, a podcast and a video or do you need to stay consistent and do say 3 blog posts and make the videos and podcasts extra.

This isn’t quite that easy to say yes or no to.  The reality is content is content and while I think 5 times a week beat the hell out of 3, exactly what form the content takes isn’t that important.  There are deffinitely some advantages though in becoming a “Jack of many trades and a master of one”.  Tune in to hear more about that and some other cool stuff in today’s episode.

Episode-57- How I Record, Edit and Publish Podcasts

I have just been getting a ton of “how do I” style questions around podcasting lately.  I am going to do the best I can with these as explaining technical mechanics on an audio show isn’t the easiest thing to do, the key is the resources and the concepts.  Trust me a Youtube or Google search will review the how today of just about anything if you know what you are looking for.   Hence today I will focus mostly on the what and the why and trust that the motivated individual will find the how.  I will also of course absolutely answer any questions below and perhaps do another episode based on follow up questions to this one.

  • Samson C01U Condenser Microphone – what I use for desktop recording
  • Audacity – Free program I use for recording
  • Skype – What I use to conduct interviews
  • Pamela – How I record Skpe Interviews
  • Levelator – How I level the volume of multi person podcasts with big differentials.  Note levelator only works with dot wav files so you will have to convert back to a mp3 before publishing, it is worth the extra step and besides the computer is the one doing the work.
  • PodPress – It is best just to search for it in “Add New” under plugins in WordPress
  • FeedBurner – For optimized feeds
  • Smart FTP – FTP Program I personally use, most of them are fine though.

Episode-37- Quality of Audio and Video Content is More Important than Quality of Production

I constantly meet podcasters and potential podcasters that are obsessed with production quality.  Now don’t get me wrong you should try to make your audio and or video quality good but many seem to be attempting to emulate FM Radio or Hollywood Cinema when it comes to video.  People do not listen to podcasts, watch videos on youtube or seek out any form of alternative media to be impressed with production quality and great audio effects or stellar cinematography.   They want information and entertainment that FM Radio and Hollywood don’t provide, so stop tying to emulate them.

Worse yet are the people who have yet to produce one episode or video because they are trying to “get it perfect”, screw perfect!  With out a full crew of professionals perfect doesn’t exist.  This type of material needs to be put out several times a week, the focus must be on the audience and giving them the content they are looking for.

Episode-34- How to Effectively Reuse Your Previous Content

A member recently asked about reusing your content specifically taking older blog posts and redoing them as podcasts.  There were wondering if this was a good idea and would it be effective as a marketing tactic.  I believe it is first of all because I have successfully done it but additionally consider the following…

  • Many new visitors to your site will not go back and read your early work
  • You “reuse” will not really be just a repeat because you now have new information
  • If you change the form (text to audio) you reach a new market segment
  • If you content is solid people will want to hear new angles on original work
  • You will be shocked how much “new” you can bring when you redo something “old”

The key is don’t just reuse the content bring new value add to the table and your audience will generally be quite happy to listen to or read your latest work.

Episode-29- Why Podcasting is the Most Powerful Form of Marketing

I would say that audio and video podcasting is the most powerful form of marketing known to man today.  Bold statement?  Tune in to hear why.

Yes it is a pretty bold statement to say podcasting is more powerful than television, radio, SEO, social media, etc.  However I believe it to be the case.  Understand that marketing power and reach are two different things.  Power is the effect the message has on those exposed to it and reach is how many people receive it.  So sure if you have a few million collecting dust you can put out a 30 second commercial every day on a major network for a year or for many years.  Your message will reach hundreds of millions of people.

Turn around and do a podcast built to a very moderate success say 1000 listeners.  You would think there is now way that is as “powerful” as the TV advertising and honestly it won’t generate as much money that is for sure but it is more powerful in its effect on those who do receive it.   The TV ad is nothing but an interruption to some mindless zombies viewing of Reality TV or some other pile of nonsense, it pulls little to no endorsement from the show it interrupts and the over all view of commercials on TV is negative other than an opportunity to run to the fridge for a cherry bon bon or something like that.

The podcast is downloaded by choice and often listened to during some other activity.  Over time the podcast itself becomes a part of the life of its listener.  Commercials done correctly on a podcast are brief and do have host endorsement.  The entire experience becomes a positive experience and most importantly it is integrated into the individuals lives, the host becomes a “friend” in fact in some cases this is a family affair and episodes are discussed at the dinner table.

This is just one reason that new media like podcasting is scaring the shit out of every gate keeper out there.

Episode-28- Why Audio and Video Should be Part of your Brand

Today we discuss how audio and video belong on your website and in your social media efforts as part of building your brand.

I think most people by now understand the need for audio and or video in many if not most websites.  Problem is that most people who will say that turn around with the classic “but not me” pile of bullshit.  Of course you!  But beyond that I think most people do not understand the paradigm shift if what I call information portability.

From the advent  of the printing press until the evolution of current video and audio methods on the web the most portable form of information was print.  Even when email and web browsing took over print was still a huge way to make data portable.  The number one selling accessory for computers of course was the printer.  Find an article and want to read it later, what did you do?  Print it of course.  Later on you could read it while having lunch in a restaurant, while kicking back on your deck or even in the john.

The issue with print is and has always been that it requires your full and undivided attention.  You can’t (or at least shouldn’t) read while driving on a highway, jogging, walking in the woods, doing your “day job” and a million other daily tasks that require our primary but not full attention.  During these tasks our vision and our ability to hold something in a way where it can be read are limited, however your ears are quite often open for business.  Think about it how many cars don’t have a stereo?

So today it is audio that is the most portable of all information.  While it requires a “player” of some type such as an ipod, iphone, mp3 player etc. to be fully portable they are very common today, in fact the majority of phones have the ability to act as an mp3 or even video player.  Here is the big thing, all video is also audio, now while some video requires you to watch it most “informational video” does not.  You can pause and tune in to highly visual components but most video information, like my podcast for instance can be listened to only and the litener still gets 90% or more of the information.

In the past entrepreneurs and businesses used tapes, cd’s etc to leverage this concept but the cost of production severely limited their distribution.  Today with electronic distribution a business can put out the most portable data ever produced daily with a very low distribution cost, the beauty being that cost is tied directly to demand with bandwith.  Instead of producing 5,000 tapes you produce the media and only pay to distribute what people actually download and even then the cost is fraction of pennies on the dollar.

The big thing to grasp is unlike a blog, typical website, news paper (on or offline) this audio or audio component of a video is 100% portable not just in the ability to distribute but in the ability of your audience to absorb it.  From driving a car, to listening while you work, to taking a hike your data if it is valued will be listened to by your audience.
