Episode-32- Internet Marketing Landmine Number Seven

If I had to pick one and only one thing that could almost by itself be the separator of successful and unsuccessful Internet Marketers, it would be the most successful Internet Marketers track everything they can possibly track. If you are tracking your results you can’t help but learn to do it better. What’s funny is this is the one thing that most people fail to do properly! I guess that isn’t funny, in fact it is a little sad for those folks.

Let me tell you they are the people driving up bid costs on competitive PPC terms on Google and Yahoo for 2-3 weeks who then disappear; never to be seen again. They are the ones sure that you can’t make money with PPC or that they must be victims of click fraud (when PPC can be and often is an almost fool proof method to make money).

Side Note: I recently read a report that said of the major Fortune 1000 companies buying traffic online over 40% we not tracking conversion or effectively tracking ROI. IN THE FORTUNE 1000! I’m sorry but to me that is an
example of having more money then brains and if I were a stock holder in one of those companies I would damn sure want an explanation from someone!

Episode-27- Internet Marketing Landmine Number Five

Today on Five Minutes with Jack we discuss have for many business people, especially part time or small time internet marketers not setting priority to daily tasks is over one of the biggest mistakes you can make.

Remember in Landmine One, we discussed making sure you always develop a plan for each project you choose to start. There is probably nothing more important then setting priority when it comes to the planning process. If you don’t set priority to each task make a list and rank the action items in order of importance you will never actually do your tasks in the right order.

Not setting priority will at a minimum make your projects take longer to complete, often it will result in skipping critical steps that will hurt your ROI (return of investment) and many times it is actually the death nail in killing projects that simply never get completed.

So how do you set priority? The process is simply a matter of first writing down all the steps you need to accomplish to finish the project, second being honest with yourself about which ones most need to be done first, third creating phases and assigning groups of tasks to each phase and finally identifying any sub tasks for each main task and prioritizing them.

Episode-20 – Internet Marketing Landmine Number Four

There is nothing and I mean nothing more important then building an “opt in” list of visitors that are willing and want to hear from you. People that give you permission to contact them from time to time, with information they want to receive.

Optimizing Web Sites via SEO (search engine optimization) is extremely effective and brings in visitors on a daily basis when done properly. Yet each time a search engine algorithm happens there are adjustments to be made and any day that huge key word you are number one on Google for could slip down to number
10 or 20 or worse!

Your list is yours; you can keep it, build it and above all maintain full control of it forever. No one can ever take it away from you! It is pure gold and worth more then any Search Engine Rank or Pay Per Click Campaign.

Done properly an opt in list provides you with thousands of people who listen to you, see you as an  authority, personally identify with you and follow your recommendations. To do this you must honestly provide your list with good valuable information and you must honestly care about them. If you do so they will feel it (even in an email) and you will develop their trust.

Episode-17- Internet Marketing Landmine Number Three

Wait!  Wait just a minute! How in the world can this be? Did we not just say in chapter two that most marketers fail to maximize income because their focus is way too broad? We did indeed and that is true but it doesn’t change the fact that the reverse can be true as well.   Let’s go back to our hypothetical marketer in chapter two.   Remember our marketer started out as an affiliate who wanted to simply sell each and every product Amazon has to offer and then wisely narrowed it down to a few authors he or she enjoyed, set up an email list and did reviews.

This was great and a perfect example of how to take a big concept and develop a narrow focus with it. Here is the other side of the coin! Let’s say our marketer does a good job with the author site, it makes a bit of money (say 200 dollars a month) many times the marketer will feel that, “well that’s nice but clearly it is not enough to quit your day job”.   They might start to self type cast themselves looking only for more authors or higher paying affiliate programs.   Instead they should realize what they have just done is create a powerful residual income stream that they only update and cater to from time to time.  Let’s say this site makes a very modest income of 200 dollars a month.

Do you realize how much money you would need in a bank account to create a 200 dollar a month residual income stream? In our example this marketer quite literally created one almost out of thin air.

They should now use this model to exploit another similar but not fully related niche, building a second email list around another site about another subject with a fully different source of income.  Then seek synergies so they can cross promote to the two visitor groups.

To Broad of a Focus

In episode eight I stated that not planning fully was the number one reason that new internet marketers and even some semi pros seem to fail or not maximize their earnings. The only problem was I told you the problem but I didn’t give you what was necessary to form an effective plan. In each episode about the landmines from here on out I will tell you exactly the mistakes to avoid and that will form your blue print of what to avoid and what to include in your planning.

So, on to Landmine Number Two! The problem of having to broad of a focus is a multi headed monster but I will touch on the major aspects to help you understand this problem, kill it, and effectively plan around it.

A typical marketer may sign up as an affiliate for a big company like say Amazon or Commission River (Where I personally learned the basics of internet marketing and eventually developed training materials for other affiliates to use.), etc. Then instead of picking one product or product group, they try to copy the huge affiliate and market every single product the affiliate has to offer.  Developing a plan around this is almost impossible!

Episode-8- Intenert Marketing Land Mine Number One

No Cohesive Plan

This is probably the one thing that either keeps any given internet marketer from making money or from making as much money as they possibly can. You simply must have a full plan before you launch any project or you will most likely cause the following things to occur.

One – You will leave out critical steps, like tracking everything so you can make adjustments, getting your search engine marketing right and millions of other details.

Two – You may be doomed by the number one thing that plagues countless would be great internet marketers. This is having 4-5 or more projects going at once each that could be completed in less then a month, but because you are juggling it takes 5 or more months to fully finish any or worse yet none of them ever get fully completed.

Three – Your project ends up needing constant support to keep going even if it works. Because you are not fully planning in the beginning you only develop a site and a product, not a system. Done right your projects should result in creating systems that run themselves once complete so you are free to now do another project. With out planning this will never happen you will always have more to do.
